Mikoko Pamoja is a Community Based Organisation that has been able to ensure conservation of 117 hectares of mangroves in the Gazi bay in Diani, Kenya. They have also created a new mangrove forest covering 10 hectares.
Carbon sequestration through planting trees on land seems a well known option. However, mangroves store 50 times more carbon in their soils compared to tropical forests and ten times more compared to temperate forests. This and protection agains coastal erosion make protecting and replanting of mangrove forests and important aspect in combatting global warming and climate change. Although a lot of complexity surrounds use of carbon credit funding, in this village in Gazi, Mikoko Pamoja has been set up and is supporting villagers in transforming their livelyhoods.
